“The fact remains however, that a superior in person is not always superior in thoughts, hence, the need to grill superiors’ thoughts to ensure their positions/acts reflects best perspectives, superior reasoning and standard performance.”

While Universities are expected to conceive, theorize and make postulates that benefit society in general, the concept of superiority seems to be eroding the notion of excellence in academics. Not being too sure if I am the only researcher who has identified this excess love and regard for superiority amongst Faculty members, it is becoming a norm that in academics, consideration for superiority of persons comes first before superiority of presentable arguments.

Consequently, the level of excellence of an academic community therefore, reflects the extent of knowledge of the superiors and not the general knowledge of the scholars. If the superiors have the say, then the community is a reflection of their thoughts.

A superior in this material refers: a person in higher authority to another. Hence, a professor is a superior of highest regard in an academic environment. Accordingly, the community or a Department reflects the thoughts of the professors in administration and scholarship.

Your superiors must be comfortably superior – Angalapu Dengiyefa

Over the years, I have observed how superior decisions matters most to administrators and community members in general over valid and what I can refer to as superior arguments. This is because no matter how intellectually sound a presentation or argument seems, since the community do not care about superior arguments or intellectuality, all such presentations are trashed.

Sacrificing Intellectuality

Sacrificing Intellectuality

The fact remains however, that a superior in person is not always superior in thoughts, hence, the need to grill superiors’ thoughts to ensure they reflects best perspectives, superior reasoning and standard performance. Allowing superiors to get away with whatever they feel should be is detrimental to wellbeing of communities that strive towards excellence.

Building a community that relies on superior’s reasoning is detrimental. It has given room and created quack superiors who enjoy such office without a corroborating intellectuality to match or a shortfall in certain areas needed from superior’s thoughts. I once heard a professor (then a doctor) who said in plagiarism, all you need to do to avoid it, is to document the name of the author accordingly. I immediately countered, not minding the implications of correcting a superior, that plagiarism software does not care if you documented the authors. Provided a word-for-word sentence is captured, the software takes note. I went on to enlighten the class that to avoid plagiarism, develop your work from the scratch, paraphrase any copied sentence and change word orders even as you ensure you document the author(s) accordingly.

An academic who is overwhelmed with respect for superiority may feel that why should I counter a doctor in a class? The reason is simple – so that all those many students who were present do not go home with a wrong notion and commence their thesis blunders. Sometimes, they may never have the chance to get the correct statement. Again, a senior class should be discursive in nature, hence the need for such interactions.

Similar instances like this abound. A professor who used a previous version of the APA referencing style in a conference and was notified said “oh! I wasn’t aware”. In other instances, when a junior staff/student writes a book and a professor is to join the authorship, the Professor’s name is placed first. This is an imposition in the area of intellectual property. Again, in some areas, whatever the professor says is final. In some projects/thesis, once a professor supervises and corrects a work, a junior staff feels inadequate to touch such work. Or let us say it as it is, a junior supervisor is tacitly not permitted to touch such work. This has resulted in so many blunders where students go away with what some quacks has to give especially for superiors who supervises for the money. As an academic, you may have your own stories to tell on the matter at hand.

I hold that superiors has to be properly grilled when necessary so that the best things in them continue to fall out rather than subject a community of intellectuals to the extant reasoning of the superiors. An academic community is a reservoir of knowledge, intellectuals and brainstorming which is never an exclusive preserve of the superiors. While superiors deserve respect for the feats they have achieved, such respect and regards should never be used to determine academic standards. Their outputs must be subjected to scrutiny which in effect, will make them do the best and not become lazy as a result of the general acceptability of their materials.

Research is emerging; knowledge is ever growing; to learning, there is no end. Hence, we must continually improve the system till the very best is attained.
