One of the possibly first document where you will see the word affidavit if your age declaration. Upon birth, your parents were supposed to get a certificate of birth from the hospital. But there they did not, then you can go to the nearest court to swear an oath regarding your age. This document of oath stating your age is the affidavit.

By law, an affidavit is a written statement confirmed by oath or affirmation, for use as evidence in court. For other social, academic and related purposes, an affidavit is a court document signed and stamped by the oath commissioner informing the user ratifying the document that the information in the document is confirmed by the government (court).
It also refers to a sworn statement in a written format made especially under an oath or affirmation before an authorised officer or Magistrate.
In other words, an Affidavit is a declaration of facts made in writing and sworn before a person having the authority to administer oath. All affidavits are verified statements and printed on Stamp papers of different denominations

What are the Uses of Affidavit?
For school purposes, affidavit is used for confirmation of your details especially where the school is in doubt. For instance, if your name appears differently in various documents, then you will be required to swear an oath stating all those documents with varying arrangements of name belongs to you.
Let us agree that affidavit is not a regular document. That is, it is not the original document but an alternative that stands in the place and confirms a document. You are expected to have a birth certificate, but if you don’t, then a statutory declaration of age, which is also the affidavit will come in. Same thing happens with your original documents, if the name varies, then an affidavit will be utilized.
So, in general, affidavit are alternative documents, they are collaborative documents used to confirm status of a person.
