The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo has educated his audience and the Students’ Management Interface Committee (SMIC) during the inauguration of the SMIC that the university won all three cases against the students citing the last court judgement as early as the previous day.
The VC stated this while trying to make the SMIC understand that school-students’ fracas doesn’t have to end in riotous endeavours. Sammy stated that the “University banned student unions because of the behaviour of the students”.
“So it was banned, the students made an attempt, they went to court, we stood our ground, we defeated them in the court. Three times they took us to court, we defeated all. Just yesterday, the last court judgement again on this students’ union matter and we defeated again. And in fact, they have been warned not to repeat it anymore.”
“The University have the authority, the powers giving the rules, to ban, to lift, when necessary because it is from the permission of the University your activities can take place.
“And we decided, after brainstorming by Senate, and then to bring out Niger Delta University as the best University in the committee of Universities in the country, we decided to reorganize the students’ union body. But that since we will not be having election at this point, we must be as transparent as possible that nobody anywhere will fault our decision. Because the best criteria to selecting this body should be based on academic performance from every faculty, to constitute, not students’ union, but students management interface committee (SMIC).”
“What that means is that this body has the powers like normal students union to coordinate all the activities of students’ unionism, interface with the students’ body and also the management of the University. And where necessary, some governing council sub-committees where they need to participate and for some decision making that has to do with students’ body, they will also be part as they represent the students community, so that whatever decision bothering students that we have all agreed, they will now be implemented.
“So, the Acting Dean of Students Affairs was mandated by Senate to collate the names of such high flyers from respective Faculties. So what we have here are the best of every Faculty except one person who was on 5 points from Basic Medical Sciences. But she is a lady, very tender, she said she will not be able to do that. She would have been the president; she is on 5 points.
“However, we have 12 of them here and they are all first class. No one is below 4.50 in this my record. By the time this body meets with anybody, anyone in the world, there will be respect since these are the best for now we have in the University. We expect that they will be very reasonable in their reasoning, in their thinking, in their ways of proffering solutions to all students crisis that we may envisage or they will be able to solve.

Ladies and gentlemen, colleagues, deans of faculties, other staff of the university and students, this 12 man committee for now will oversee the activities of the students union in this university. However, to make it formal, official, we are going to give them from the office of the dean, students affairs, an oath of office form, which they all of them here before the public will take and it is going to be binding. And to make it legal and official, the N50 official stamp is attached and sgned across so that it can be presented anywhere.
Papers of appointment will also be tendered as evidence in future as students are fond of introducing themselves as one time this, one time that.
