This research work is on the English language in Nigeria: a curse or blessing? In multilingual society like Nigeria, language which can be used as an effective instrument for national development and the promotion of national unity can also be used as a weapon for marginalization and exclusion. The latter can destabilize a nation as it sets different linguistic groups against each other, in a quest for identity and their relevance to the society. In a country like Nigeria this scenario can be found, where language is the sole factor in integration and disintegration. This research work addresses the importance of the English language in Nigeria, its negative and positive effect on Nigerians and the indigenous languages. It also suggests that the English language should continue to play its unifying role, while the indigenous languages are developed and maintained.
