This study is aimed at identifying academic performance in secondary schools in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The research has a sample population of one hundred and forty (140) made up of one hundred students and forty teachers drawn from four (4) secondary schools in Southern Ijaw Local Government area of Bayelsa state. The instrument used for the research is one (1), the questionnaire. Twenty five (25) questionnaires were sent to the various Secondary school. Ten (10) questionnaires were sent to each of the school for the teachers to give their responses. The result of their responses was analyzed using the simple percentage method. Consequently, the causes were identified as follows: Shortage of qualified classroom teachers, lack of conducive learning environment, indiscipline, truancy, lack of teaching/learning materials, lack of adequate equipped laboratories and libraries, etc. base on the findings, the following recommendations were made that government should provide enough manpower, trained qualified teachers for the school system, on the job training and re-training of non professionals, ensure adequate provision of instructional materials and teaching/learning aids, well equipped laboratories and libraries to promotes teaching and learning.
