CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is said to be synonymous with development. The society sees education as a platform upon which physical and technological development rest, therefore, adopts it as an instrument for national development. O’ Connor in Kezial & Lawrence (2005), states that “Education is the process by which society through schools, colleges, universities and other institutions deliberately transmit its cultural heritage”. This implies that education exposes an individual to the societal ways of life which comprises knowledge, skills, values, community and the school so as to function effectively in the society.
In the same vein, Nwala in Erebagha et al (2003), emphasized that “Education whether formal or informal is the recognized method whereby a person acquires his knowledge, skills and manners necessary not only to combat the hazards and problems of life (physically, theoretically and psychologically) and to secure the needs of life biologically, special and economic but also to fit into the company of human beings.
