Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the factors militating against effective teaching and learning of economics in secondary schools in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. To carry out the investigation, the researcher used questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The sample population was made up of 100 students and 50 teachers totalling 150. Also, 10 secondary schools in Yenagoa Local Government Area were used for the study. From the data collected, analysis were made through Average mean and organized and presented in tables to show absolute members of Average mean worked which determine the major problems of teaching economics. The major findings of the study are that; some unfavourable environmental factors such as absence of good instructional materials or good academic facilities like library, laboratory and classrooms, poor mathematical background of the students, inexperience of the teachers are detrimental to the problem of teaching economic. In the light of the above-mentioned factors, the researcher made some recommendations that would enhance the teaching of economics in secondary schools.
