Abstract
This study is intended to show the possibility in analyzing literature with language and to view how language is used and organized to achieve beauty and meaning. It is also intended to show the importance of analyzing literature with the use of linguistic devices, to bring out the beauty and meaning in a literary work of art. The study defines the relationship between language and artistic function. It confirms the view that writers adopt different devices/styles to encode meaning and achieve aesthetic beauty in their works. Specifically, the study examines language in Femi Osofisan’s Women Of Owu under graphology and phonology as headings. The main aim is to examine how a new generation Nigerian writer has used the resources of language to interprete and describe his immediate socio-cultural environment. M.A.K Haillday’s Systemic Functional Grammar, will enhance our understanding of the literary language used by Osofisan and African literature in general.
