Four fish samples Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia), Clarias gariepinus (cat fish), Synodontis budgetti (ekpoki), and Mormyrops deliciosus (Cornish jack) were collected from Swali river to determine their cholesterol-LDL and HDL. The fishes were oven dried at 70°C for 24 hours. Extraction of the oils from the fishes was carried out by Soxhlet method using petroleum spirit as the solvent. The mixture of lipid and petroleum spirit was heated in a bath at 80°C until the solvent was completely evaporated. The extracted oils were then sent to the laboratory were the LDL-C HDL-C levels were determined using UV spectrophotometer. The result values for all the samples were <0.0001. The outcome of the results showed that the result values were below the detection limit. The study revealed that fish can help in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
