Recall that the University Council had on 17th June, 2020 declared the office of the registrar vacant where it consequently sought applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant post.
The University Council had on 29th July, 2020 had a new Registrar in the person of Mr. Benjamin Joffa who emerged from the pool of applicants who applied for the position of the then vacant office of the Registrar.
In a brief interview with the University PRO, Mr. Idoni Ingezi noted that the outgone Registrar who had served in public capacity for the last 40 years have performed very well for the University in the last five years in her capacity as the University Registrar.
The PRO was positive that the new registrar will however, inject his wealth of experience to take over from where the outgone registrar stopped and to improve upon the current system.
“There was a review of the University Law that 3 months to the expiration of the tenure of the Registrar, the position should be advertised so there would be no vacuum. This is to ensure that all the processes should be in place for the new Registrar to be ready to take over” the PRO said.
“So the incubent Registrar Mrs. Effua E. Berepuobo retired yesterday and the beauty of it all was that it coincided with her birthday. So, it was a kind of double-barreled celebration. Effua was part of the Intercessory Prayer Network, so to speak. Since after the NDU crises, there are some volunteers who have decided to come and pray with the Vice Chancellor every working day, and we have been doing this for the past 3 years. And she was part of the group. Every Wednesday used to be our prayer session, so we took a time out to honour the outgone Registrar” the PRO added.
“The Management committee too also honoured her for meritorious service. It might interest you to know that the outgone Registrar served 40 years. It is a milestone achievement; she did 20 years in former UST, Rivers State University of Science and Technology; then she transferred to the Niger Delta University where she served for another 20 years, making it a total of 40 years of meritorious service”.
“It is a thing of joy for someone to be healthy and held various offices within the registry and finally rose to the top echelon of her calling in the administrative setting of the University. So, it is not something to be swept under the carpet” the PRO noted.
So, yesterday, both the intercessory forum, the management committee which she also served very well, her immediate office and some friends came together to organize a birthday bash for her at the Social Science Boardroom. So that was the event that took place yesterday and also ushering in the new Registrar Mr. Benjamin Joffa.
The PRO also added that the University Law provides a single tenure of 5 years for principal officers. This is to say that Mr. Joffa will be the Registrar for the next 5 years.
Efforts to reach the new registrar, Mr. Benjamin Joffa was abortive as he was out of the office for official duties at the time of visitation.
