According to unverified sources, the Bayelsa State governor, Dr. Henry Seriake Dickson has initially intended to transfer some of the Niger Delta University non academic staff to his own private university, African University in Toru -Orua, where the to-be transferred staff would receive salaries lesser than what they receive in the Niger Delta University. In addition, some others who are not to be transferred or retained would be dropped. While all these are ongoing, the non academic staff has not received salaries for some months. This development, the non academic staff could not sink, hence, a meeting was held earlier today which resulted to a decision to engage in the public display.

Sources close to the school system however, decried the marriage between the Governor and the Vice Chancellor whom they claimed is now a political stooge to the governor as against previous Vice Chancellors who stood their ground against any form of manipulations.

Nevertheless, insinuations are rife as to the reasons behind the actions of the state governor. public opinion holds that the Niger Delta University has been an ATM for the Amassoma indigene who use the school to siphon government money. They also alleged that there are numerous ghost workers in the school system who never come to the school to work. Today, the number of workers who came out to show solidarity makes some to wonder how non-academic staff became this many.

As at the time of this report, the government has made no reference to this development. However, in spite of the riot, the year one verification exercise still held with little hitches in the morning due to the riot.
